A decasecond is a unit of time in the SI system equal to exactly 10 seconds. Its symbol is das. While technically valid under SI rules, the decasecond almost never appears in practice because the second itself is already the standard unit for measurements in this range, making a multiplier unnecessary for most industrial work.

The decasecond exists because SI permits metric prefixes on base units: deca- means 10, just as kilo- means 1000 or milli- means one-thousandth. For time, the second is the base unit, so deca- can attach to it arithmetically. However, industrial and scientific practice strongly favors expressing intervals of 10 to 100 seconds as plain seconds rather than adopting a prefix. You will not find decaseconds in engineering drawings, control system setpoints, or calibration certificates.

Larger time scales follow different conventions. Intervals of 1000 seconds or more are typically stated in minutes, hours, or days depending on context. Smaller intervals use milliseconds or microseconds rather than decimals of a second. The practical gap in usage means decaseconds occupy an awkward middle ground where the raw second serves all needs.

Decaseconds appear only in specialized theoretical or regulatory contexts where SI compliance requires explicit unit notation. Metrology laboratories and standards bodies recognize them as formally correct, but working technicians and engineers need not employ them. Understanding the prefix helps with SI literacy, but decaseconds themselves carry no practical burden in daily inspection or measurement work.
