decay: when your airspeed bleeds away

In flight, decay means a progressive loss of airspeed caused by excess drag overcoming the thrust available to maintain level flight. Unlike a stall, which is an abrupt aerodynamic break, decay is a slow erosion of velocity that a pilot can feel building and must arrest before it becomes dangerous. The aircraft maintains a nose attitude and altitude initially, but the indicated airspeed drops steadily across the dial.

Decay occurs most commonly during climb at high altitude, where thinner air and reduced engine power mean less thrust is available relative to the aircraft's weight and drag. A shallow climb angle, flap extension, gear extension, or weight near maximum all increase drag and hasten decay. In a light aircraft at 10,000 feet or above, decay can accelerate if a pilot maintains a climb pitch angle designed for sea-level conditions; the airspeed will inch downward until the aircraft is no longer climbing and begins to descend.

Recognition and recovery are straightforward in principle but require vigilance. The vertical speed indicator is your first warning: the rate of climb drops, then stops. Airspeed and altitude tape will confirm it. To arrest decay, reduce pitch attitude, retract flaps or gear if extended, and level off if needed to recover energy. Attempting to climb out of decay by raising the nose compounds the problem and risks transitioning into a stall.

In maintenance and flight operations, decay is distinguished from other speed-loss scenarios. Instrument degradation, engine wear reducing available power, or rigging errors affecting drag can all precipitate decay in cruise where none should occur. During approach and landing, controlled decay is part of normal procedure: power is reduced gradually, airspeed decreases in a managed way, and the aircraft descends on a stable glide path. Unmanaged decay on approach, by contrast, is hazardous because recovery space is limited and the pilot has little altitude buffer.

The term reflects the gradual, erosive nature of the process. A pilot speaks of the aircraft beginning to decay, the decay accelerating, or holding off decay through better energy management. It is a word that describes both the phenomenon and the pilot's awareness of it: decay is something you feel building, and something you must actively prevent.
