DET: precise timing for aircraft systems testing

A digital event timer is an electronic instrument that records the exact moment when discrete electrical events occur within an aircraft's systems, typically to microsecond or millisecond resolution depending on the unit's specification. In the maintenance hangar, a DET serves as proof that a system responded to a command at the expected instant, or reveals why it failed to do so. When troubleshooting intermittent faults in autopilot engagement, landing gear sequencing, or engine fire detection circuits, maintenance technicians connect a DET to monitor signal timing relationships that a simple multimeter cannot capture.

Modern DETs are integrated into larger aircraft test stations or sold as standalone portable units. A technician configures the device to monitor a specific pin, bus line, or discrete wire, setting threshold voltage levels and a time window around an expected event. When the monitored signal crosses that threshold, the timer captures a timestamp and stores it in memory or displays it on screen. Multiple channels allow simultaneous monitoring of related signals, so a technician can see whether a landing gear selector input arrives before the hydraulic pump command, as the design requires.

Variants and Data Recording

Older analog event timers used a rotating drum and mechanical pen to trace signal activity. Digital equivalents record to solid-state memory and output data to a computer or print to paper via built-in USB or serial ports. Some DETs are ruggedized for field use in unpressurized cargo holds or exterior antenna bays; others remain bench instruments. Resolution, channel count, and memory depth vary widely. A basic unit might offer 100 microsecond resolution and 4 channels; a sophisticated avionic test set may provide nanosecond timing and 32 channels with several hours of continuous logging.

Common failure modes include lead corrosion at probe connections, which causes the DET to miss low-amplitude transients, and software configuration errors where the threshold voltage is set too high or too low for the actual circuit. A technician must also account for cable propagation delay when measuring timing across long wiring harnesses; the signal may arrive at the test point slightly after the actual event at the source component.

The term 'digital event timer' reflects the shift from mechanical to electronic time measurement in the 1980s and 1990s. Within aircraft maintenance, DETs occupy the middle ground between simple go/no-go test boxes and full-scale engine or avionics test stands. They are essential when repeatability matters: a fault that happens once every hundred power cycles is invisible to a voltmeter but obvious to a DET with overnight logging enabled.
