EOD: when daylight work stops for aircraft

EOD marks the legal and operational boundary in aviation maintenance: the moment when natural daylight becomes insufficient for safe work on an aircraft, and maintenance operations must cease unless artificial lighting is deployed. In most jurisdictions, this threshold sits around 30 minutes after sunset, though it varies by regulatory framework and local airfield rules. The term is critical because many maintenance tasks, particularly inspection work, are prohibited under artificial light alone due to the inability to detect certain defects visually, and because fatigue regulations for maintenance technicians often tie duty-hour limits to daylight hours.

The practical effect of EOD is sharp: a technician cannot legally continue hands-on work on flight-critical systems once the sun has set, even if floodlights are available. This creates hard scheduling constraints. A major teardown or inspection must be planned to complete before EOD, or the work halts mid-task. Airlines and maintenance bases structure their shift patterns around EOD windows, which shift throughout the year and are longest in summer months. A winter EOD might arrive at 4:45 PM, forcing early start times; summer EOD might not occur until 9 PM, extending productive hours significantly.

Variants and exceptions

Some aircraft maintenance is classed as permitted under floodlighting: routine servicing, parts replacement in non-critical areas, and administrative tasks. However, detailed inspections, rigging work, and any task requiring judgment about aircraft condition typically cannot proceed under artificial light. Line maintenance on a runway also observes EOD rules, though active defect rectification for flight safety may override this in declared emergencies. Different regulatory bodies, such as the FAA, EASA, and national authorities, publish slightly different thresholds, though all recognize the principle.

The term EOD itself is sometimes confused with end-of-day in a calendar sense, but in maintenance it is a solar event, not a clock time. A technician working on night shift does not recognize EOD as a work boundary; only those on daylight or swing shifts encounter it as an operational constraint. Planning tools at maintenance bases display EOD tables alongside weather and runway data, and maintenance resource scheduling systems automatically flag tasks that cannot finish before the EOD cutoff.
