A small explosive device attached to the railhead to provide an audible warning when a train passes over it.

A detonator is a small sealed cartridge containing a small charge of primary explosive, typically 0.5 to 2 grams of material like lead azide or PETN, designed to be clamped or adhesively attached to the top of a rail. When a train wheel passes over the device, the weight and impact detonate the charge with a sharp crack audible for several hundred meters, alerting crews to the train's presence or creating a record of its passage at a specific location.

In rail operations, detonators serve two primary functions. First, they warn workers and equipment on or near the track that a train is approaching, providing seconds of audible alert when vision is obstructed by fog, gradient, or curve. Second, lineside or maintenance crews use them to verify that a specific train has passed a particular point, creating an acoustic checkpoint when electronic monitoring is unavailable or as a backup measure. The device itself is passive and requires only the train's motion to function.

Two main designs dominate: the friction-based type, held between two metal clips that clamp to the rail head, and the adhesive type, bonded directly to the rail surface. Both types must tolerate rail temperatures from roughly minus 40 degrees Celsius to plus 70 degrees Celsius without misfiring or degrading. The friction type is more common in freight and heavy rail work because it is reusable and does not damage the rail surface. Detonators are typically replaced after a single use or after an agreed storage period, since the primary explosive degrades under exposure to moisture and temperature cycling.

Variants and limitations

Detonators are classified by their charge mass and by the primary explosive compound used, though railway standards, such as those published by the Rail Technical Strategy group in the UK, specify the sound output and reliability thresholds rather than internal composition. Modern types produce a report of approximately 130 to 140 decibels at a distance of 1 meter. However, detonators are ineffective in very high ambient noise environments and fail entirely if rain, dirt, or ice prevents the wheel from making firm contact with the device. They are strictly regulated hazardous goods; transport, storage, and handling require explosives licenses and documented training.

The term detonator derives from the verb detonate, though it is something of a misnomer: the charge is small enough that the main risk is not fragmentation but hearing damage to personnel nearby and thermal burn to the operator placing it on the rail. The device is distinct from a fusee or track torpedo, which produce flame and smoke for visual signaling, though in practice rail crews may deploy both types at the same incident site.
