An interurban is a high-speed electric railway line designed to move passengers between separate towns and cities, typically over distances of 20 to 100 miles. Unlike streetcars confined to city grids or mainline railways running freight and express trains, interurbans occupied a middle tier of the transport network, offering frequent service on fixed schedules between growing metropolitan areas. The typical interurban operated at 40 to 60 miles per hour, making it faster than road transport of the era but slower than steam railways, with the key advantage of low operating cost and high frequency.

Power came from overhead catenary wires carrying direct current, usually at 600 to 1200 volts. Cars were lighter than mainline equipment, typically weighing 40 to 60 tons, with two or four traction motors powered by multiple-unit control: one motorman could operate an entire train without a separate locomotive. This made interurbans economical to run on modest passenger volumes. Many lines were single-tracked with passing sidings at intervals, or used double track only on congested urban segments.

Interurbans flourished in the United States and parts of Europe from roughly 1900 to 1930. The technology proved so effective that by 1916 over 18,000 miles of interurban track existed in North America alone. Equipment was usually purchased from specialist builders such as Jewett, Niles, or St. Louis Car Company, which offered standardized designs in various weights and capacities. Service included seated passengers, mail, and light package freight, with some lines operating parlor cars or sleepers on longer routes.

The interurban declined rapidly after 1920, displaced by improving highways and automotive competition. Rubber-tired buses required no infrastructure investment and reached any destination, while automobiles offered personal flexibility. Deferred maintenance during the Depression and World War II shortages hastened closures. By 1960, only scattered lines remained, mostly in the northeast and midwest.

Today the term survives in infrastructure planning and heritage rail operations. Modern light rail and commuter electric trains perform similar functions but at higher speeds and with heavier vehicles, operating more like scaled-down mainline railways than classic interurbans. The equipment itself is nearly extinct; surviving interurban cars are museum pieces, though their engineering principles of lightweight electric multiple-unit design persist in regional rail networks.
