Digger gold is the collective term for recoverable precious metals, chiefly gold, silver, copper, and palladium, embedded in the printed circuit boards, connectors, and components of end-of-life electronic equipment. Unlike placer or hard-rock mining, these metals are already concentrated and refined to a high degree within the waste stream, making recovery economically viable without traditional ore processing. The term reflects the actual labour of extraction: technicians and recyclers literally dig through discarded phones, computers, server boards, and industrial control systems to recover these materials.
A single smartphone may contain 0.034 grams of gold, along with silver, copper, and trace platinum group metals. A used server motherboard can yield several grams of precious metals per kilogram of material. Desktop CPUs and high-end graphics cards are particularly rich sources. The concentration of gold in e-waste is typically 50 to 100 times higher than in natural ore, which is why the economics work: the metal is already beneficiated by the original manufacturing process.
Recovery methods and grading
Physical separation techniques dominate: shredding or manual disassembly isolates circuit boards and connectors; leaching with acids or cyanide solutions then dissolves the metals into solution; electrolysis or chemical precipitation recovers them as refined product. Some recyclers focus only on high-grade feedstock like gold fingers from edge connectors, which may contain 20 to 40 percent precious metals by weight. Lower-grade boards, populated with surface-mount components, require more processing overhead and typically go to larger operations with the capital for hydrometallurgical lines.
The term digger gold emerged from informal precious metals recovery, particularly in developing markets where technicians manually extract components and materials from e-waste. It carries no formal definition in regulatory or standards literature; it is workshop language. Industrial recyclers often use the term loosely to refer to any recoverable precious metal content, though purists reserve it for the material actually extracted from consumer electronics rather than ore or new scrap.
Digger gold sits at the intersection of waste management, mining economics, and supply chain strategy. Original equipment manufacturers design products knowing that metals will eventually be recovered; some companies now conduct design-for-recovery assessments to maximize the value and ease of extraction. The viability of digger gold recovery depends on commodity prices, labour costs, and the sophistication of processing technology available locally.
