A squeegee is a handheld tool with a flexible rubber or synthetic blade mounted in a frame or handle, designed to press liquid, paste, or material against a surface and move it across in a controlled direction. The blade edge makes contact with the work surface while the handle remains above; the operator applies downward and forward pressure simultaneously. This simple mechanical action removes excess liquid, spreads adhesive evenly, or flattens material into place.
The blade itself is the critical component. Most squeegees use natural or synthetic rubber (often 40 to 60 Shore A hardness), though polyurethane and silicone blades exist for specialized tasks. Blade width ranges from 2 inches for detail work to 24 inches or more for production runs. The blade edge can be straight, beveled, or rounded; a sharp 45-degree or 60-degree bevel cuts better than a dulled edge. Blade thickness typically runs 3/16 to 1/4 inch, stiff enough to apply force without excessive flex.
Squeegees appear across screen printing, window cleaning, flooring installation, auto glass work, and food processing. A screen printer uses a squeegee to drive ink through mesh onto substrate; the angle and speed of the stroke affect ink deposit weight and line quality. In flooring, squeegees remove excess epoxy or adhesive before it sets. Framers and glaziers use them to remove trapped air and water from laminated panels. Blade material choice matters: rubber dulls faster than polyurethane on rough concrete, while silicone resists heat and some solvents better than rubber.
Common wear and failure modes
A squeegee blade dulls, nicks, and hardens with use and age. Worn or nicked edges leave streaks, fail to remove liquid cleanly, and require more downward pressure to function. Heat and solvent exposure can harden rubber permanently. Blades are typically disposable or replaceable components costing a few dollars to replace; the handle is reused. Quality squeegees have handles designed for angled grip and one-handed operation, with blade cartridges that slide into or screw onto the frame.
The tool's name comes from the sound of the blade edge pushing moisture and air aside. In the printing and finishing trades, squeegee technique is a learned skill: angle, pressure, speed, and number of strokes per application all influence the final result. A poorly executed stroke leaves voids or uneven coverage; screen printers and installers develop feel through repetition.
