dizzy: the engine's spark-timing gatekeeper

A dizzy is the distributor cap and rotor assembly that sits atop a petrol engine's ignition system. Its job is mechanical and electrical: it takes the high-voltage pulse from the ignition coil and routes it to each spark plug in the correct firing order and at precisely the right moment. The rotor spins with the engine, and as it turns inside the cap, its contact arm sweeps past fixed terminals that connect to the plug leads. This is how an engine with no computers fires eight cylinders in the right sequence, thousands of times per minute.

The term "dizzy" is pure shop slang, probably born from the visual of that spinning rotor arm, though its origin is not documented in engineering literature. You will hear it used freely among mechanics in the UK and Commonwealth countries, less commonly in North America where "distributor" remains the standard. The word has stuck because it is quick and unmistakable when you are under the bonnet in a noisy workshop.

How it fails and why it matters

A dizzy deteriorates in predictable ways. The rotor arm wears and loses contact with the cap terminals, causing misfires. Carbon tracking can form inside the cap, especially in damp climates, creating unwanted short circuits between terminals. The shaft bearings wear, allowing the rotor to wobble and drift out of timing. Plug leads corrode at the cap terminals. Any of these faults will cause rough running, poor cold starts, or complete failure to fire.

Timing drift is the real danger. If the rotor no longer delivers spark at the correct moment in the cylinder stroke, the engine loses power and efficiency fast. On older vehicles without an electronic ignition control module, the only fix is removal, inspection, and usually replacement. Modern engines have moved to coil-pack or coil-on-plug systems and have no dizzy at all, which is why the term is becoming historical in some trades.

Understanding the dizzy matters because many vehicles on the road still use them: any petrol engine built before the late 1990s, and many up to the 2000s, depend on this mechanical device. A mechanic who cannot diagnose a dead dizzy will waste hours chasing phantom electrical faults. The distributor sits at the heart of older ignition architecture, and knowing its role is foundational to understanding how pre-electronic engines work.
