In manufacturing metrology, a DJ is a dial indicator, also known as a dial gauge: a mechanical instrument that translates small linear movements into rotational motion of a needle across a calibrated dial face. The term is industry shorthand, particularly common in British and Commonwealth machine shops, though less frequent in North America where "dial indicator" dominates. The needle position tells you how far a surface has moved from a reference point, typically measuring to within 0.01 mm or 0.001 inch.

A DJ consists of a stem, a contact point at the tip, an internal rack-and-pinion mechanism, and a dial graduated in divisions that correspond to specific distances. You mount it in a stand or clamp it to a machine bed, then bring the contact point into touch with the workpiece surface. Any deviation from the set reference point shows immediately on the dial. Most DJs measure in one direction only, though continuous-reading models rotate the needle freely around the dial multiple times for larger movements.

The name "DJ" likely arose as factory abbreviation in the mid-twentieth century when dial gauges became standard bench and machine tools, though its origin in British slang is not formally documented in trade literature. It is distinct from a "drop indicator" or lever gauge, and incomparable to a vernier caliper or micrometer, which measure absolute dimensions rather than deviation from a reference.

Common failure modes include a sticking needle, loss of spring tension after impact, or internal wear that causes hysteresis, where the reading differs depending on whether you approach the target from above or below. A DJ should be checked regularly against a precision step gauge. Even small shocks can knock the needle off zero, so they are usually stored with the stem vertical and protected from vibration.

On a coordinate measuring machine or surface plate, a DJ serves as your eyes, translating mechanical contact into visual feedback. In production setups, a DJ is often the first quick check before committing a component to tighter measurement. Its simplicity, low cost, and mechanical reliability have kept it in use despite the rise of electronic gauges and digital readouts.
