double pica: a type size that dominated large-format printing
Double pica is a typographic measurement denoting a large body of type, established as a standard in the metal type era. In British practice it measured 22 points; in American foundries it ran 24 points. The term belongs to the traditional point system that governed metal type casting, where sizes climbed in named steps: pica (12 points), great primer (18 points), double pica, and larger cuts. This standardization mattered enormously because a compositor had to order type by these recognized sizes, and printers stocked matrices and punches accordingly.
The "double" in the name refers to doubling the pica measure, the baseline unit of type sizing. One pica equals roughly 1/6 of an inch, so double pica occupied substantial body width on the page. At 24 points in the US system, double pica sat between the smaller 18-point great primer and the 28-point paragon size. It was a workhorse for display work: title pages, broadside announcements, newspaper mastheads, and legal documents where weight and legibility mattered.
Practical limits and casting challenges
Double pica type, whether cast from brass matrices or machined from steel strikes, created real production constraints. The larger the sort, the more metal required per character, the higher the casting temperature, and the longer the cooling time. Kerning (overlapping letters) became difficult at this size because of the mechanical bulk involved. Serifs and fine strokes could clog or cast imperfectly. A foundry producing double pica had to maintain separate equipment: heavier type molds, larger casting machines, dedicated storage.The distinction between the British 22-point and American 24-point standard created friction in international printing. A job cast in one country could not be directly replicated in another without recasting or resizing, frustrating both compositors and customers. This fragmentation persisted until the Didot and point systems gradually aligned in the 20th century, though complete uniformity never arrived.
Double pica became obsolete with phototypesetting in the 1960s and 1970s, which rendered the mechanical constraints of metal type irrelevant. Digital type systems dispense entirely with casting and named sizes, allowing any point measurement on demand. Still, the term survives in historical printing texts and in the vocabularies of letterpress practitioners who work with surviving metal type collections.
