Ten and a half quires, or, commonly, 250 sheets, of paper printed on both sides; also, in some cases, the same number of sheets printed on one side, or half the number printed on both sides.

A token is a fixed unit of measure in sheet printing and finishing, consisting of 250 sheets of paper. The term originated to describe a convenient handling quantity, smaller than a ream (500 sheets) but large enough to track and invoice work efficiently. In contemporary practice, a token typically refers to 250 sheets printed on both sides, though historical usage varied depending on whether stock was printed one-sided or two-sided.

The token emerged as a practical subdivision because 250 sheets represents a manageable weight and volume for a single operator to handle during collation, binding, or packing operations. A token of standard 80 gsm A4 paper weighs approximately 1.25 kilograms. This size proved especially useful in job shops where multiple small print runs were processed daily, allowing press operators and finishing crews to bundle work into discrete, trackable units without the bulk of a full ream.

In letterpress and offset printing workflows, tokens served as the natural checkpoint for quality inspection and counting. A printer might deliver invoices in tokens, or a bindery would receive work organized by token to ensure accurate tallying. The unit remains embedded in some trade terminology and costing systems, particularly in older production facilities or among printers working with heritage equipment. Modern digital printing workflows have largely replaced tokens with sheet-count specification, but the term persists in conversations about historical print quantities and in operations that still physically hand-count output.

The relationship between tokens, quires (24 sheets), and reams creates occasional confusion. A token equals 10.4 quires, which is why the original definition specified "ten and a half quires." This fractional relationship reflects the token's practical origin rather than mathematical elegance: it was simply the quantity that made sense for human handling and commercial transaction at the press.
