dress

An item of clothing (usually worn by a woman or young girl) which both covers the upper part of the body and includes a skirt below the waist.

dress: garment with bodice and skirt in one piece

A dress is a single-piece garment consisting of a fitted or semi-fitted upper section, called the bodice, joined at the waist to a skirt that extends downward. Unlike separates, the top and bottom are cut as one continuous construction. The dress remains the foundational silhouette in apparel manufacturing and sits at the center of pattern grading, sizing systems, and production workflows across mills and factories.

In textile production, the dress category spans numerous construction types distinguished by seam placement, closure methods, and fabric weight. A simple day dress might use a center front seam with a zipper closure and minimal shaping. A sheath dress relies on darts or princess seams to create body contour without excess fabric. Wrap dresses use tie closures. A-line silhouettes employ gathered or pleated skirt panels. Each variant demands different cutting layouts, which affects fabric yield and production cost per unit.

Sleeve attachment and neckline finishing add further complexity. Set-in sleeves require armhole binding or facing and account for bulk in the upper chest area. Sleeveless constructions need reinforced armholes to prevent tearing under wear stress. Necklines range from crew necks finished with bias tape to V-necks requiring precise point matching. Facing grain orientation matters; a poorly planned facing will pull and distort the neckline opening after washing.

Sizing and pattern blocks

Dresses present particular grading challenges because the bodice and skirt scale differently as sizes increase. Bust girth and hip girth do not grow proportionally. A size 4 might have a 34-inch bust and 35-inch hip. A size 16 might have a 40-inch bust and 43-inch hip. Grade rules must account for this variance separately in the bodice and skirt, requiring two distinct seam progression formulas. Misaligned grade rules cause fit complaints and returns.

In production, dresses incur higher labor time than tops or simple skirts because bodice and skirt must align at the waistline seam. Seam allowances must be consistent, notches must match, and pressing must set the waist seam properly to avoid puckering. Packing and shipping add volume relative to weight, making freight cost per unit significant for lower-priced dresses. For this reason, dress production often clusters in regions with lower labor costs and favorable shipping routes.
