A simple embroidery or hand sewing stitch in which the needle is passed in and out of the fabric in a series of stitches that circle an edge of the fabric.

The whip stitch is a hand-sewn edge finish where the needle travels at a shallow angle along or just below the edge of fabric, looping thread around the selvage or fold to bind and neaten it. Unlike a running stitch that passes straight through the cloth, the whip stitch works primarily on the surface, catching only a thread or two of the fold while the main thread wraps around the perimeter. This makes it ideal for closing gaps in seams, binding appliques, and finishing blanket edges without creating bulk.
The stitch works by angling the needle nearly parallel to the edge rather than perpendicular to it. The thread emerges from inside the fold or just beneath the surface, then sweeps around the outside edge in a smooth arc before re-entering the fold a short distance ahead, typically 2 to 4 millimeters. Each pass creates a small loop of thread that locks the edge in place. Tension must stay moderate: too tight and the fabric puckers; too loose and the edge rolls or unravels.
Variants and applications
In industrial textile work, whip stitching is less common than mechanical edge finishing, but remains standard for hand repair, heirloom work, and high-end custom pieces. A ladder stitch (or invisible stitch) is a close relative that closes seams from the inside, leaving nearly no visible thread on the exterior. Binding edges of blankets, quilts, and felt often uses a simple whip stitch in matching thread. Applique work requires the stitch to secure fabric pieces invisibly or with deliberate contrast thread for decorative effect.
The name derives from the motion of the thread: it whips around the edge rather than boring through it. The stitch leaves a line of small loops along the perimeter, creating a finish that is both functional and, when done neatly, nearly invisible. Thread choice matters significantly; thicker threads or heavy-duty thread will show prominently, while fine cotton or silk thread blends into the edge seamlessly on matching fabrics.
Common problems include puckering (too much tension or stitches spaced too far apart), thread showing on the face of the fabric (needle entering too deep), and the edge still rolling after stitching (thread too loose or insufficient passes per inch). The stitch is labor-intensive and cannot be rushed; production speed depends entirely on the skill and hand speed of the operator, making it impractical for high-volume manufacturing.
