dovetailed: interlocked woodwork that won't come apart
A dovetailed joint is a woodworking connection made by cutting interlocking, wedge-shaped projections (the tails) on one board and corresponding recesses (the pins) on another, then fitting them together. The angled geometry creates mechanical resistance to both tension and shear, which is why the term has come to mean any structure that is firmly locked in place.
The actual cutting angle typically runs between 1:6 and 1:8 in hardwoods, and 1:5 to 1:7 in softwoods. These ratios control how undercut the joints become. A steeper angle (closer to 1:5) provides more mechanical purchase but weakens the short grain at the pin tips; a gentler angle (1:8) is more forgiving of layout and sawing error. The pins and tails are laid out and cut by hand saw, router template, or CNC machine depending on the work and budget.
There are three working variants. Through dovetails allow the joint to be seen from both ends, common in drawer fronts and casework where the aesthetic is part of the design. Half-blind dovetails hide the pins or tails on one face, used where appearance on one side matters more. Sliding dovetails are cut into the grain direction and slide together horizontally, useful for shelves, dividers, and infill panels that need to be removable.
Why the name: The tail projection resembles a bird's forked tail feather, and the verb dovetail picked up the transferred sense of things fitting together snugly long before furniture makers codified the joinery. The name is now so established that any two parts engineered to mesh perfectly are said to dovetail.
Failure in dovetailed work almost always comes from layout drift, saw deviation, or wood movement after assembly. If the tails are cut too fine relative to wood stability, seasonal shrinkage across the grain will open the joint at the edges. If glue is applied too heavily, squeeze-out can prevent the joint from closing fully. For this reason, modern shop practice often uses a very thin spread of glue or relies on mechanical precision and friction fit alone.
