A piece of wood or similar material fitted into a surface not suitable for fastening so that other pieces may be fastened to it.

A dowel is a cylindrical rod, typically made from hardwood like birch or oak, that is driven or glued into a hole to create an anchor point for fasteners or to join pieces of material together. Dowels come in standardized diameters ranging from 1/4 inch to 1 inch, with lengths up to 36 inches. The purpose is straightforward: to transfer loads from screws, bolts, or other fasteners into material that cannot safely hold them on its own, such as particleboard, plasterboard, or concrete.

In woodworking, dowels serve two distinct functions. Alignment dowels are short, precise pins that locate and hold joint components during glue-up, typically 3/8 inch diameter and 1.5 inches long. Structural dowels, by contrast, transfer shear and tensile loads across joints in cabinet making and furniture assembly, often requiring hardwood dowels to work with corresponding hardwood plugs. Dowels are also used to fill screw holes and defects in finished wood surfaces; a short length is glued in place and then planed flush with the surrounding wood.

In masonry and concrete work, dowels perform critical structural functions. Reinforcement dowels are steel bars, not wooden ones, that connect separate concrete pours or lift-up walls by being partially embedded in the first pour and extending into the second. These are typically 1/2 inch to 1 inch diameter rebar. The name "dowel" in this context refers to the function rather than the material.

Typical applications and failure modes

Wooden dowels fail primarily through shear when undersized or glued with insufficient depth of embedment. A 1/4 inch diameter dowel holding a 50-pound load in particleboard requires at least 1.5 inches of insertion depth on each side of the joint. Dowels also fail when driven across the grain in solid wood, as the wood shrinks seasonally and the dowel becomes loose. Steel dowels in concrete can corrode if not coated or properly spaced from the concrete surface, leading to spalling and structural compromise.

The term "dowel" comes from the German "döbel," referring to a wooden peg or plug. In industrial manufacturing, dowels are machined to precise tolerances and often supplied with tapered ends to ease insertion. They remain a practical solution in trades where threaded fasteners cannot be used, whether due to material weakness, the need for reversible joints, or the cost of installing threaded inserts.
