The gap in road surfaces, running rails at rails at junctions, etc, that allows the wheel flange of a rail vehicle to pass.

flangeway: the gap that lets train wheels through at crossings

A flangeway is the recessed channel or gap cut into a road surface, crossing, or adjacent rail structure to accommodate the projecting flange on the bottom of a railroad wheel. Without this clearance, the wheel flange would catch on the rail head or paving and prevent the vehicle from passing. The flange itself is a critical safety feature, gripping the rail from both sides to keep wheels tracking true; the flangeway simply allows that flange to exist without creating an obstruction.

The geometry is simple but precise. A standard iron wheel flange projects roughly 1.25 to 1.5 inches below the rail head on each side. The flangeway must be cut deep enough and wide enough to clear this projection with minimal play, typically 0.25 to 0.5 inches of clearance per side. At grade crossings, where rails cross roads, the flangeway is either cast into the crossing panel or created by recessing the rail itself below the paving surface. At rail junctions and switches, flangeways are essential wherever a wheel might encounter a rail head that is not its primary running rail.

The flangeway becomes a maintenance headache in practice. Dirt, sand, and moisture collect in the recess; freezing can wedge debris or ice that eventually derails vehicles. Paving adjacent to flangeways can shift or settle over years of traffic, changing the gap width and causing jolting or binding. At crossings, the casting or recess can develop cracks that enlarge with thermal cycling and dynamic loading. Inspection and cleaning of flangeways is routine work on all rail infrastructure, and replacement of worn or damaged crossing panels is a major cost in transit systems with frequent street-level rail.

The term itself is descriptive: the way (or passage) through which the flange moves. It reflects industrial English's straightforward compound naming. Railworkers and transit engineers use the word precisely and often, especially in maintenance and design, because the flangeway is one of the first places to look when a vehicle is tracking poorly or a crossing is causing complaints. The flangeway is invisible to passengers but critical to safe operation; its absence would make rail vehicles impossible.
