drape: how fabric behaves when it hangs

Drape is the characteristic way a fabric folds, clings, or flows when suspended or hung under its own weight. In manufacturing and textiles, it describes both the visual appearance and the measurable physical behavior of a material, from how a suiting fabric falls on a garment to how a curtain material moves with air currents. It is a critical quality parameter for apparel, upholstery, and window treatments.

The drape of a fabric depends on fiber composition, yarn structure, thread count, and finish. Heavy materials like wool suiting or linen typically drape with distinct folds and vertical lines, while lightweight synthetics like polyester can create soft, fluid folds or remain relatively stiff depending on how they are constructed. A fabric with poor drape may bunch, tent away from the body, or hold unwanted creases. Conversely, excessive drape can make a garment look shapeless or cause problems in cutting and sewing.

Measuring and controlling drape

Drape is tested using standardized methods, most commonly the Cusick drape coefficient, which hangs a circular sample of fabric (usually 28.5 cm diameter) over a circular support and measures how much of the sample hangs down relative to the support diameter. Results are expressed as a percentage, with lower percentages indicating stiffer fabrics and higher percentages indicating more fluid drape. Different end uses require different target ranges; a formal suiting might target 40 to 50 percent, while a chiffon might target 70 to 85 percent.

Manufacturers control drape through fiber selection, weave or knit structure, thread count, and finishing chemicals. Resin finishes, for example, can reduce drape by stiffening the fabric, while softening agents or special weaves can increase it. The term itself comes from the verb to drape, meaning to hang cloth or arrange it in folds, a usage dating back centuries in tailoring and interior design.

Poor drape is common cause of rework in apparel production. Fabrics that drape unexpectedly can result in garments that fit incorrectly, wrinkle prematurely, or require excessive pressing. For this reason, mills and manufacturers routinely test sample lots before committing to bulk purchases, and specifications for drape coefficient are written into quality agreements for high-end textiles.
