drawrod

A rod which unites the drawgear at opposite ends of the car, and bears the pull required to draw the train.

drawrod: the coupling rod that bears a train's pulling force

A drawrod is a steel rod that runs the length of a railway car, connecting the drawgear at opposite ends and transmitting the pulling force along the consist. It is the primary load-bearing member of the coupling assembly, taking the tensile stress that develops when locomotives haul the train. On freight cars, the drawrod typically runs inside or along the underframe, anchored to the draft lugs at each end. Its diameter and material specification vary by car type and intended service, with heavier cars and hazmat equipment requiring correspondingly stouter rods.

The drawrod works in concert with the coupler and draft gear. The coupler itself (usually an automatic or knuckle coupler) makes the physical connection between cars; the draft gear provides cushioning by means of friction plates or springs; and the drawrod absorbs and transmits the longitudinal pull. Under dynamic loading, the drawrod experiences both tension and impact shock. On older equipment, cast steel drawrods were common; modern cars increasingly use forged or normalized steel to reduce brittleness and fatigue failure.

Wear and Failure Modes

Drawrod failure is rare but serious. The rod can crack if struck by impact load during rough coupling, especially in cold weather when draft gear friction increases. Corrosion attack on the rod's surface reduces its effective cross-section and can nucleate cracks at the bearing lugs. Inspection standards typically call for magnetic particle testing or visual examination of the rod at heavy maintenance intervals. A failed or severely corroded drawrod renders the car unfit for service and requires removal for replacement or conditioning.

The term "drawrod" reflects its function directly: it draws (pulls) and is a rod. The word is primarily North American; British railways use the term "drawbar" for analogous equipment, though drawbars and drawrods differ slightly in design and attachment method. The drawrod remains a critical but unglamorous component: it is engineered for decades of service, rarely thought about unless something goes wrong.
