home signal: the gatekeeper to the next track section
A home signal is a fixed railway signal that protects entry to a section of track ahead. It stands at the boundary of a block or signalled section and governs whether a train may proceed forward or must stop. The signal reports the status of the track section it protects: if that section is clear and the next signal is not at danger, the home signal clears; if anything ahead is unsafe or occupied, it remains at danger (red). Its name derives from its historical role guarding the entrance to a station, the "home" terminus.
Home signals sit in a strict sequence along the line. A train progresses from one home signal to the next, each governing passage through a block section typically a few hundred metres to a kilometre long. The signal works in concert with block instruments and track circuits. Modern home signals on busy lines are colour-light units showing red (stop), yellow (proceed cautiously), or green (proceed). On single-line railways and branch lines, mechanical semaphore home signals remain common, with the arm horizontal for danger and at forty-five degrees for clear.
Where they sit in the signalling chain
The home signal is the primary protection device at section entry. Behind it stands the starting signal, which releases a train from the platform or siding. Ahead of it lies the next home signal. A signal box operator or automatic block system monitors track circuits and adjusts home signals according to occupation and movements planned ahead. If a home signal fails to clear when it should, the line grinds to a halt; if it clears wrongly, a collision becomes possible.
Failure modes include mechanical sticking in semaphore work, lamp failure in colour-light signals, and track circuit faults that leave the signal locked at danger even when track is clear. The latter causes frustrating delays but is intentionally conservative: a signal that stays red when unsafe is far preferable to one that clears when it should not. Testing and maintenance protocols for home signals are strict and frequent because the cost of signal failure, whether causing a block or permitting an accident, is severe.
On high-speed lines and complex junctions, home signals work within sophisticated interlocking systems that prevent conflicting moves. On rural lines, a home signal may be the only signal for miles. The fundamental principle remains constant: it is the neutral arbiter between stopping and proceeding, and the driver obeys it absolutely.
