overtop

A garment designed to be worn over the top portion of other clothes, such as an overshirt, vest, or overtunic.

An overtop is a garment cut to sit over the shoulders and torso of another garment, typically a shirt, tunic, or chemise. In textile and apparel production, it functions as an intermediate layer: thinner than a coat but structured enough to be a standalone piece. The garment opens down the front and fastens with buttons, ties, or hooks, making it quick to put on and remove without disturbing the underlayer.

Common overtop styles include the overshirt, vest, and sleeveless tabard. An overshirt is cut fuller through the body with full or three-quarter sleeves, often left unbuttoned as a working layer in tailoring shops and factories. A vest overtop has no sleeves and is cut narrower at the sides, sitting closer to the body. The distinction between an overtop and a jacket lies in weight and structure: an overtop uses lighter fabrics like cotton, linen, or wool blends, typically 100 to 180 grams per square meter, while a jacket incorporates interfacing and sometimes padding.

Production and Materials

Overtops are produced in the same cutting and sewing operations as other soft-top garments. Pattern grading accounts for the fact that the piece will layer over another garment, so ease allowances at the chest and armhole are larger than in a fitted shirt. Seams are often topstitched for durability and visual definition. Buttonholes must be reinforced to prevent tearing, since the overtop is pulled on and off frequently. Hem depth on an overtop typically ranges from 20 to 40 millimeters depending on the intended weight and finish.

The term overtop entered English textile vocabulary in the 16th century as a covering garment worn by working people over their main shirt. In modern manufacturing, the overtop category includes apron-vests worn in kitchens and factories, lab coats that function as protective overtops, and smocks used in art and craft work. The distinction matters because an overtop is measured and fitted differently from a base layer or a structured outer coat.

Fit problems in overtops center on shoulder seam placement and armhole depth. If the armhole is too high, the undertop bunches at the neckline; if too low, the overtop slips down the back. Neckline opening must accommodate the neck of the garment below without binding. In production, overtops are often tested on dress forms wearing fitted underlayers before the pattern is approved for a full run.
