drifter: the miner who drives horizontal tunnels

A drifter is a mine worker who operates pneumatic or hydraulic drilling equipment to bore horizontal or near-horizontal tunnels through rock. Unlike shaft sinkers who work vertically, drifters drive drifts, the access tunnels and haulage ways that form the skeleton of an underground mine. These tunnels may follow ore bodies laterally, connect mining levels, or provide ventilation and escape routes.

Drifters work with percussion drills powered by compressed air or hydraulic fluid. A typical rig mounts a drill boom on a tracked or wheeled carrier, allowing the operator to position drill steels of varying lengths (often 1.2 to 1.5 meters per rod) to strike the rock face. The operator controls bit pressure, rotation speed, and feed rate by hand controls or automated systems. Hole diameter usually ranges from 38 to 51 mm for emplacement of explosive charges.

The work demands precise geometry: holes must be angled correctly to ensure even rock breakage and minimal floor damage. Poor hole spacing or angle causes overbreak (rock failure beyond the intended boundary), which wastes ore and creates safety hazards, or underbreak, which leaves hard ground that slows progress. A skilled drifter understands rock type and adjusts technique accordingly; granite requires different hole patterns and timing than sedimentary rock.

Conditions and hazards

Drifters face high noise levels (often 95 to 105 dB), vibration transmitted through equipment and drill steel, and silica dust exposure from rock penetration. Ventilation systems must work continuously to remove drill fumes and dust; respiratory protection is standard in most operations. Heat buildup in confined drifts, especially deep underground, adds physical stress.

The term drifter distinguishes this role from sinker (vertical shafts), blaster (explosive placement and firing), and mucking operator (load-haul-dump). In hard-rock mining (gold, copper, nickel), drifters are essential; in coal mining, development work is typically assigned differently, which is why the historical definition explicitly excludes coal. Modern mines increasingly use mechanized long-hole drill rigs that a single operator can control from the surface or a safe distance, but underground drifting remains common in ore bodies where hole length or access constraints prevent larger equipment.
