The roofstone is the body of rock that lies directly above a coal seam. It is the immediate overhead in underground coal mining, and its character determines much about how safely and economically the coal can be extracted. Roofstone may be sandstone, shale, mudstone, siltstone, or occasionally limestone, depending on the geological sequence of the coalfield. Its thickness, strength, and stability are critical factors that miners assess before and during extraction.

Weak or fractured roofstone creates the most serious hazards in a coal mine. When coal is removed from below, the roofstone must either be supported by props, pillars, or roof bolts, or it will cave. A fall of roof can be sudden and total, burying workers and equipment. The nature of the roofstone determines what support strategy is practical: a thick layer of strong sandstone may need only light bolting, while thin or shaly roofstone may require much heavier and closer support, or even immediate backfilling of the void.

Roofstone assessment and support

Before work begins, geologists and mining engineers examine roofstone samples and bore logs to classify its strength, joint spacing, and water content. A sandstone roofstone with tight joints and low weathering may stand unsupported for weeks; a soft shale may stand for only hours. Surface subsidence risk also depends on roofstone thickness: thin roofstone over shallow seams allows ground movement to reach the surface more readily than thick roofstone does. Longwall mining systems are often chosen specifically where the roofstone is strong enough to allow controlled caving behind the face.

The term roofstone is standard in coal mining terminology across the English-speaking world and is always singular, referring to the immediate unit even if composed of multiple thin layers. The layer immediately below the coal is called the seatstone or floor; the distinction matters because a strong roofstone with a weak floor creates different problems than the reverse. Miners speak of a mine's roofstone characteristics as one of its defining features, sometimes more influential than the coal itself on working conditions and output rates.
