Driver-only operation, or DOO, is a staffing model where a single crew member, the driver or motorman, operates a train without a conductor, guard, or second crew member on board. The driver assumes full responsibility for train movement, passenger boarding and alighting, door operation, and station stops. This differs from traditional crewed operation where a conductor or guard handles passenger services and doors while the driver focuses on traction and braking.
DOO is most common on urban rapid transit systems, light rail networks, and suburban commuter lines where stations are frequent and passenger interaction is straightforward. Many metro systems worldwide, including those in London, Paris, and Toronto, operate significant portions of their networks under DOO. Regional and commuter rail operators have also adopted it on quieter routes or off-peak services. The model requires specific signalling systems, platform screen doors, or other safety infrastructure to work, since the driver cannot physically inspect the train or platform during operation.
Technical and operational constraints
Implementation of DOO demands robust automatic train control (ATC) or automatic train operation (ATO) systems to manage safety functions normally performed by crew. Platform screen doors, used on many metro lines, prevent passenger falls and allow sealed departure. Wayside staff or platform attendants often monitor key stations to assist during emergencies or passenger incidents. Train radio systems must allow the driver to communicate with control centres and station staff. Dwell times at stations typically increase under DOO since the driver must wait for confirmation that all passengers have cleared before closing doors and departing.
Safety and liability remain contentious issues. While modern driverless metros exist, true DOO retains a human operator for emergency response and decision-making. Incidents such as passenger illness, unruly behaviour, or mechanical faults place full burden on the single crew member. Union opposition to DOO has been strong in many jurisdictions, with concerns about driver workload, passenger safety during emergencies, and job losses for conductors and guards.
The economic driver for DOO is straightforward: elimination of conductor or guard wages represents significant annual savings on labour-intensive operations. On a 24-hour urban rail network, the savings compound across thousands of service hours yearly. Operators balance this against higher infrastructure costs for safety systems, platform modifications, and sometimes increased maintenance demands on automatic systems.
