The drivetrain is the assembly of mechanical components that converts engine output into rotational motion at the wheels. It sits between the transmission output and the final drive, handling torque multiplication, directional changes, and the actual delivery of power to road or ground. In a typical vehicle, this means gears, shafts, bearings, differentials, and axles working in sequence to transfer energy while managing the speed and force relationship that the wheels need to move the vehicle.
Configuration varies by vehicle type and drive position. Rear-wheel drive uses a long driveshaft running under the chassis to reach a rear differential; front-wheel drive integrates the differential into the transmission housing at the front, with short axles to each wheel; all-wheel drive splits torque between front and rear differentials. Each layout affects weight distribution, interior space, and the complexity of handling power delivery under load.
Common failure modes and maintenance points
Wear concentrates at specific interfaces. Constant-velocity joints on front axles wear from cornering loads and age, causing clicking under turn and vibration. Differential bearings deteriorate if lubricant breaks down or leaks; gear tooth pitting follows. Driveshaft balance degrades if supporting bearings fail, producing harsh vibration at highway speeds. Seal leaks at axle flanges and differential housings are routine, especially in high-mileage or poorly maintained vehicles.
The term 'drivetrain' distinguishes the mechanical path from the engine itself and from the steering or suspension systems it must cooperate with. It overlaps with 'powertrain' in casual speech, but powertrain includes the engine and transmission as a unit, whereas drivetrain refers strictly to what comes after. Understanding which component is failing, or which assembly is being replaced, depends on knowing where drivetrain begins and ends in the specific layout.
