A driving car is a non-powered passenger or light rail vehicle fitted with a complete set of operator controls, allowing a trained driver to command the entire train from that position without a separate locomotive up front. It is typically marshalled at one or both ends of a trainset, giving the operator forward visibility and full authority over traction, braking, doors, and signalling systems. The driving car itself generates no power; it is hauled by electric supply overhead, third rail, or diesel-hydraulic power supplied through couplings and control wires from dedicated power cars or from distributed motor cars within the set.

In electric multiple unit (EMU) stock, the driving car houses the master controller, brake valve, and operator desk, but traction power flows through dedicated traction motor cars sandwiched between the driving cars. In diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains, the driving car is often paired with a power car carrying the diesel engine and transmission, or motors may be distributed throughout the set. The design allows operators to work from either end of the trainset without reversing direction, which is essential for shuttle services and branch lines where turning loops are impractical.

Common configurations and failure modes

Most modern trainsets carry a driving car at each end so either can be the leading vehicle. The driving car must be robust enough to withstand minor collisions and platform contact without disabling the control systems. Older designs often had an exposed operator cabin; modern cars place the driving position well inboard and protect it with crumple zones. Mechanical issues in the coupling systems, air brake lines, or electric control circuits between the driving car and power cars can render the entire set inoperable, which is why driving cars are subject to detailed pre-service checks.

The term 'driving car' is British and Commonwealth railway vocabulary; North American practice typically uses 'control car' or 'cab car' (especially in commuter rail). European railways often call the same vehicle a 'Führungsstand' wagen or 'motrice de tête'. The device reflects an economic logic: a trainset with two or more power cars and multiple driving cars reduces the need for dedicated locomotives and allows flexible consist formation on busy networks. Conversely, a driving car with no active traction of its own is completely useless if separated from its power source or if control circuits fail.
