driving motor: the powered car that steers a train
A driving motor is the motored vehicle in a multiple unit train set from which the train operator controls the entire formation. Unlike a simple powered locomotive coupled to unpowered coaches, a driving motor integrates traction equipment, control systems, and the driver's cab into a single unit that forms part of the train consist itself. This arrangement allows the driver to sit at the front of the formation with direct visibility and immediate control of propulsion and braking across all coupled vehicles.
Multiple unit trains typically consist of several cars, of which only one or two are driving motors. The remaining vehicles may be unpowered trailers or additional motored cars without driver cabs, all linked by couplers and control lines. Each driving motor carries traction motors (usually asynchronous AC or DC machines), pantograph or third-rail pickup, power electronics, and air brake distribution. The train set operates as an integrated system because electrical and pneumatic control signals run continuously through the consist, allowing the single driver to command acceleration, braking, and direction for the entire formation.
Driving motors appear in two main configurations: end driving cars that anchor the front and rear of a train set, and driving trailers positioned at either or both ends. On most modern regional and urban multiple units, there is a driving motor at each end so the train can operate in either direction without turning. Older designs sometimes used a single driving car with unpowered trailers behind it. The power distribution differs: some units have all traction motors mounted on the driving car itself, while others distribute motors across multiple vehicles to reduce unsprung mass and improve ride quality.
Driving motors must be heavier than trailer cars because they carry additional equipment: traction transformers or converters, main switchgear, regenerative or resistive braking hardware, and the driver's cabin with safety systems. This extra mass is typically 2 to 5 tonnes more than a comparable non-driving car in the same set. The cab itself is a sealed, ergonomic workspace with visibility forward and to the sides, instrument panels, control handles or consoles, and emergency equipment including isolators and sand apparatus for adhesion.
The term reflects British railway practice where the driving car is called a motor car because it is the motored unit from which the train is driven. In continental Europe and North America, equivalent vehicles may be called driving cars, cab cars, or motorized coaches. The distinction matters in rolling stock inventory and maintenance, as driving motors require specialized periodic inspections of control electronics, brake systems, and pantograph mechanisms. When a driving motor fails, the entire set may become unusable unless it can be towed or coupled to another powered unit.
