A drop tank is a collapsible or rigid portable container, typically ranging from 500 to 5,000 gallons in capacity, deployed at wildfire or structure fire scenes to serve as a temporary water supply source. Unlike fixed hydrants or natural water sources, the drop tank allows fire engines to refill rapidly without traveling to distant supply points, reducing operational downtime and enabling crews to establish relay operations in remote or under-served areas.

Drop tanks come in two main types: rigid models, usually made of steel or aluminum and mounted on trailers, and collapsible fabric tanks (also called portable tanks or pillow tanks) that fold flat for transport and expand when filled. Collapsible versions are lighter and easier to position in tight terrain, while rigid tanks tolerate rough handling and multiple seasons of use. Both feature intake and discharge ports sized to mate with standard fire engine couplings, typically 2.5-inch or 3-inch diameter connections.

In practice, drop tanks create efficiency gains but introduce logistical complexity. A fire engine fills the tank at a reliable water source, then crews position the tank downhill or near the active fire zone. Subsequent engines fill directly from the tank rather than making round trips. In wildland operations, a single drop tank can reduce travel time by half and maintain sustained water application rates across multiple attack lines. However, tanks must be anchored firmly when water is flowing, as the force of a large engine drawing water can shift an unbalanced tank and rupture connections.

The name reflects the simple action: crews literally drop the tank at a chosen location. It is distinct from a water tender or tanker truck, which is self-propelled and carries water to the fire. A drop tank is stationary once placed, relying on gravity and engine suction to deliver water. In densely hydrated urban fire systems, drop tanks are rarely used; they become essential in rural, industrial, or wildland settings where hydrants are absent or inaccessible.

Maintenance is straightforward but critical. Fabric tanks can degrade from UV exposure and abrasion, requiring inspection before deployment. Rigid tanks must be drained completely and allowed to dry to prevent corrosion and mold growth inside. Any tank that has held contaminated water must be flushed thoroughly, as sediment or chemical residue can clog engine intake screens or contaminate subsequent operations.
