Drafting is the withdrawal of water from a natural or artificial source, such as a pond, river, tank, or hydrant, for use in industrial processes, fire suppression, or cooling systems. In industrial safety contexts, it most commonly refers to the drawing of water from static sources like ponds or reservoirs using portable or fixed pumping equipment, or from pressurized systems like fire hydrants and sprinkler lines. The rate of withdrawal is measured in gallons per minute (gpm) or liters per minute (lpm), and the duration and volume available determine whether a source is viable for the intended application.

The physical mechanics of drafting depend on the source type and elevation. Drafting from a static source below pump level requires priming, in which water is filled into the pump inlet to remove air before operation. Positive head drafting, where the water source sits above the pump, eliminates this step. Maximum drafting lift is typically limited to around 25 feet of vertical distance under ideal conditions, though this decreases as elevation, temperature, and hose friction losses increase. Hard suction hose with a minimum internal diameter is used to minimize friction and air leakage.

Common industrial drafting scenarios

In fire protection, mobile equipment such as fire trucks draft from hydrants, ponds, and tanks to supply water at pressure to hoses and nozzles. Industrial cooling systems may draft continuously from a local water source. Some manufacturing processes, such as concrete cutting or dust suppression, require portable drafting setups. Emergency response teams also draft from any accessible water source when pressurized systems are unavailable or insufficient.

Problems in drafting arise when sources are inadequate: water levels drop faster than they replenish, sources become contaminated or obstructed, or suction lines leak or become kinked. Cold weather can freeze water in hoses and fittings. Improper priming techniques introduce air into the system, reducing pressure and flow. When drafting from static sources over extended periods, sediment and debris can clog intake screens and damage pump impellers.

The term reflects its literal meaning: water is actively drafted, or pulled, from a source rather than supplied under existing system pressure. In industrial safety planning, knowledge of available drafting sources and their capacities is essential for emergency response, process water supply, and fire suppression readiness.
