dually: pickup with dual rear wheels for heavy loads

A dually is a pickup truck equipped with two wheels on each side of the rear axle, for a total of four rear wheels instead of the standard two. This configuration is also called a dual rear wheel (DRW) setup. The extra contact patch and load distribution allow the truck to carry and tow substantially more weight than a single rear wheel (SRW) pickup of the same make and model.

Duallys are common in commercial and agricultural work because they handle payload and trailer weight better. A standard pickup might be rated for 3,500 pounds payload; a dually version of the same truck can often handle 7,000 pounds or more. The dual wheels also improve stability when towing heavy trailers, reducing sway and improving braking performance under load. Most major truck manufacturers offer dually versions of their heavy-duty pickup lines, typically in the 2500 and 3500 class trucks.

Trade-offs and practical limitations

Duallys are wider than standard pickups, usually 6 to 8 inches wider across the rear axle, which affects parking, lane width, and maneuverability in tight spaces. Tire replacement and maintenance costs are higher because the truck requires six rear tires instead of two. Fuel economy is slightly worse due to the added weight and rolling resistance. Duallys also sit noticeably higher off the ground and can be harder to load by hand, which is why some operators choose SRW trucks for lighter work despite the capacity disadvantage.

The term "dually" originated from the dual wheels on the rear axle and became standard shop and industry vocabulary decades ago. In formal automotive documentation and spec sheets, manufacturers typically use the abbreviation DRW. The setup dates back to heavy commercial trucks but became a standard option for consumer-grade pickups as construction and agricultural equipment grew heavier.

Wheel and tire configuration for duallys is critical because improper pairing, inflation, or wear patterns can cause the outer wheels to carry excessive load. Tire shops must balance both sets on each side, and many operations rotate tires on a specific schedule to manage uneven wear. Alignment is also more complex than on SRW trucks because the dual wheels are sensitive to suspension geometry problems.
