A duckbill is a hand tool shaped like a flat, wedge-ended pry bar, used to force open padlocks by exerting leverage on the shackle or body. The working end splits into two flat, curved prongs that resemble a duck's bill, which grip or separate the lock components. It is typically 12 to 18 inches long, made of hardened steel, and weighs 2 to 4 pounds. The opposite end often has a flat striking face, allowing the tool to be driven with a hammer or mallet to increase forcing power.
Duckbills are standard equipment in lockout tagout (LOTO) procedures, where workers must disable machinery by removing or destroying padlocks that secure energy isolation devices. They are also carried by fire and rescue services for emergency entry when locks obstruct access to hazardous areas or victims. Law enforcement and corrections staff use them for forced entry during warrant execution. The tool appears in many industrial safety kits alongside bolt cutters and cable cutters.
The tool's effectiveness depends on the hardness differential between the steel shackle and the lock body. A duckbill works by wedging into the gap between shackle and body, then applying twisting or prying force to separate or fracture them. Some variants have a single pointed tip instead of the split prong design; others incorporate a perpendicular handle or striking loop for two-handed operation. Professional-grade versions are forged from tool steel and tempered to around 48-52 HRC (Rockwell hardness) to resist deformation while delivering impact force.
The name comes directly from the tool's resemblance to a duck's bill in profile. The split prongs create a beak-like appearance, and the slight curve of each prong mirrors the shape of waterfowl beaks. This descriptive nomenclature is common in hand tools; the same visual logic applies to crowbars, claw hammers, and pry bars.
Duckbills are less precise than lock picks and far faster than cutting tools, making them the practical choice when a lock must be disabled without regard to preservation. They cannot open a lock in the conventional sense; they destroy it. This makes them unsuitable for routine locksmith work but essential in emergency and industrial contexts where speed and certainty matter more than the condition of the lock itself.
