Dutch corner: three-quarter brick finish at the angle

A Dutch corner is a brickwork detail where the corner of a wall terminates with a three-quarter brick rather than a full brick or a half brick. The three-quarter unit is cut to length and laid so its long face exposes itself on both the front and side elevations of the corner simultaneously, creating a clean visual transition without leaving a thin sliver of exposed cut face.

This technique differs from a standard English corner, where bricks alternate in a fully-bonded pattern, and from a half-brick closure, which uses a half-length unit. The three-quarter brick allows better mechanical lock and visual proportion at the termination point. The cut is made perpendicular to the brick length, removing about one-quarter of the unit and leaving a substantial bearing surface.

Practical application and variants

Dutch corners appear most commonly in cavity wall construction and at quoins, especially where a wall ends or changes direction abruptly. Bricklayers choose this method when the wall head needs to present a finished appearance on two faces without resorting to a full corner brick (which would waste material) or a half brick (which looks proportionally weak). The technique demands accurate cutting and careful laying to avoid slippage on the narrow bearing surface.

The naming convention reflects historical regional masonry practice rather than a Dutch invention; the term describes the visual effect rather than its origin. Proper execution requires dry-bonding before mortaring to ensure the three-quarter unit sits level and doesn't tilt outward under its own weight. Mortar consistency and trowel technique matter significantly, as the reduced contact area is less forgiving than full-brick layouts.
