DVD drive
An optical drive used for reading data from and possibly writing data on a DVD.

A DVD drive is an optical drive that reads data encoded on a polycarbonate disc using a laser beam focused on a spiral data track. Most industrial DVD drives also write data to blank recordable media. The drive spins the disc at speeds between 1x (constant linear velocity around 3.49 m/s) and 16x, depending on the data layer and write speed. A single-layer DVD holds 4.7 gigabytes; a dual-layer disc holds 8.5 gigabytes. The laser wavelength is 650 nanometers (red light), shorter than the 780 nm wavelength used in CD drives, allowing tighter track spacing and pit dimensions.
DVD drives are built in several form factors: 5.25-inch external units, 3.5-inch internal desktop drives, and 2.5-inch external portable units. Read-only drives (DVD-ROM) are common in industrial control systems and kiosks where data integrity is critical. Read-write drives accept both DVD-R (recordable once) and DVD+R media, and some support DVD-RW (rewritable) formats, though rewrite cycles degrade the polycarbonate and reduce reliability. The interface is typically SATA in modern equipment, though older drives use IDE or SCSI.
Wear and failure modes
The laser diode degrades over time, particularly in drives running continuously in factory or archive environments. Rated lifetime is typically 10,000 to 50,000 power-on hours for the optical head. The spindle motor bearing fails from contamination in dusty industrial settings. Media defects are common: the polycarbonate substrate can warp at temperatures above 55 degrees Celsius, and manufacturing errors in the reflective layer cause read errors at specific disc positions. Thermal cycling during repeated write operations reduces write quality, especially near the end of a writeable disc's usable area.
In manufacturing and logistics, DVD drives are still used for archival backup of CAD files, firmware distributions, and compliance records where 20-year data retention is required. Some industrial PLCs and CNC machines read initialization parameters from DVD-ROM during startup. However, adoption has declined since 2010 as USB flash storage and network boot have become more reliable and faster.
The acronym DVD originally stood for Digital Versatile Disc, though the official full form was later changed to Digital Video Disc. The term "drive" distinguishes the hardware mechanism from the media itself. In trade contexts, "DVD" without qualification usually means DVD-ROM, while write capability is specified explicitly as "DVD writer" or "DVD-RW capable."
