E100: nearly pure ethanol fuel for dedicated engines

E100 is a fuel composed of approximately 95 to 100 percent ethanol by volume, with the remainder being denaturant and water content kept below 1 percent. Unlike the ethanol blends found at most petrol stations, E100 is too aggressive for conventional gasoline engines and requires purpose-built fuel systems, higher compression ratios, and compatible seals and gaskets throughout the fuel delivery path.

The '100' in the designation refers to the theoretical ethanol content target, though true 100 percent fuel-grade ethanol is hygroscopic and impractical to produce and store. Commercial E100 typically contains 98 to 99 percent ethanol, with a small amount of denaturant such as petroleum naphtha added to prevent human consumption and to improve cold-start properties. Water content must be carefully controlled because ethanol absorbs moisture from air, and phase separation occurs above certain thresholds, rendering the fuel unusable.

Vehicles designed for E100 have been manufactured primarily in Brazil, where sugarcane ethanol production is substantial and government fuel policy has supported flex-fuel and dedicated ethanol vehicles since the 1970s. These engines run hotter and require higher fuel flow rates because ethanol contains roughly 34 percent less energy per liter than gasoline. Fuel injectors, fuel pumps, and sensor calibrations must all account for these differences.

Cold start and corrosion challenges

E100 has a higher latent heat of vaporization than petrol, which improves cooling efficiency but makes cold starting difficult in temperate climates. Many E100 vehicles include heated fuel systems or dual-tank designs that allow a small amount of gasoline to be used for winter starting. Corrosion of mild steel fuel tanks is also a genuine problem; stainless steel or epoxy-lined tanks are standard in E100-capable vehicles because ethanol's hygroscopic nature and slight acidity attack unprotected metals.

E100 remains a niche fuel outside Brazil and a few other ethanol-producing nations. Its use depends entirely on dedicated vehicle design and infrastructure availability. Misfueling a standard car with E100 causes rapid fuel system failure, so strict dispensing controls and clear labeling are essential wherever E100 pumps are located.
