Oil-canning is a visible waviness or buckling that forms in flat sheet metal surfaces, most often in aluminum, steel, or stainless steel panels. The deformation typically runs in a series of gentle waves across the face of the panel rather than a sharp crease; the surface appears to ripple like water, yet the material itself remains intact and can sometimes spring back partially if stress is relieved. The defect is purely cosmetic in most applications, but it catches light unevenly and signals either manufacturing stress or design weakness.
The condition occurs most readily in large, thin-gauge sheet panels where the span between support points is substantial relative to material thickness. Aluminum panels of 0.5 to 2 mm thickness are particularly prone, especially after cold-rolling or coil storage. Stainless steel cladding on buildings, automotive body panels, and appliance faces are frequent sites. The wave pattern typically runs perpendicular to the rolling direction of the coil, and the spacing between waves often ranges from 100 to 400 mm depending on the initial stress state and panel stiffness.
Why it happens and how to prevent it
Oil-canning results from residual stress locked into the material during rolling, shearing, or forming operations. When these internal stresses are released unevenly across the panel surface, the material seeks lower energy by buckling slightly rather than remaining perfectly flat. Temperature fluctuation, humidity changes, and vibration during transport or installation can trigger the onset. Prevention strategies include increasing material thickness, adding stiffening ribs or corrugations, controlling coil stress through careful annealing, and avoiding sharp tool marks or mechanical damage that initiate the wave pattern.
The term itself derives from the visual resemblance to the sheen and ripple of oil on water, though the comparison is purely descriptive rather than indicating any oil involvement in the process. In the sheet metal trade, oil-canning is distinct from warping (permanent bending) or oil-spot defects (localized corrosion marks). Quality control usually involves visual inspection under raking light or tactile assessment with a straightedge; some manufacturers set acceptable deflection limits of 5 to 10 mm per meter of span.
