EAC

The European Astronaut Centre, based in Cologne, Germany, is the operational training and research facility where European Space Agency astronauts prepare for spaceflight. Unlike launch facilities or mission control centers, the EAC functions as a dedicated campus for long-duration preparation, housing simulators, underwater training pools, and classroom facilities. It is where crew members log hundreds of hours before their orbital missions.

The centre operates the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory equivalent for EVA (extravehicular activity) training, a large swimming pool where full-scale mockups of spacecraft modules and airlock segments are submerged. Divers assist astronauts working in spacesuits to simulate the weightless environment. This is the primary venue where European crew members practice spacewalk procedures, tool handling, and emergency scenarios in conditions approximating microgravity physics.

Although the EAC is an ESA facility, it operates within a broader international training infrastructure. European astronauts also train at facilities operated by NASA, Roscosmos, and JAXA. The EAC handles mission-generic skills, technical systems familiarization relevant to European payloads and modules, and language-specific preparation. Crew members destined for International Space Station expeditions use EAC resources alongside partner agency facilities.

The centre also conducts research into crew performance, human factors in long-duration spaceflight, and countermeasures for physiological deconditioning in microgravity. This work feeds directly into training protocols and mission planning. Equipment and procedures tested or developed at the EAC may inform standards across European spaceflight operations.
