ease: slack you build into a fit to prevent jamming

In manufacturing and assembly work, ease is the small gap or clearance deliberately left between two fitted parts so they can move, sit together, or be assembled without binding or forcing. It is measured in thousandths of an inch or hundredths of a millimeter, depending on the application and tolerance system in use. Without ease, tight-fitting parts will jam, wear rapidly, or break during assembly or operation.

Ease appears in many contexts across the shop floor. A shaft rotating in a bearing requires radial ease (typically 0.001 to 0.005 inches) to prevent friction and heat buildup. A gear meshing with a pinion needs backlash, which is a form of ease between the tooth flanks. A sliding fit, such as a drawer or a hydraulic piston rod, demands enough ease that the part moves freely under its own weight or light hand pressure, yet not so much that accuracy or alignment suffers. The amount of ease is specified in the drawing, often through a fit designation such as H7/g6 in ISO metric or a limit-and-fit callout in inch dimensions.

Ease and tolerance are related but distinct. Tolerance is the total allowable variation in size of a single part. Ease is the intentional gap between two mating parts. A designer must account for worst-case tolerances on both parts to ensure that even when both parts are made at the extremes of their tolerance ranges, they will still have enough ease to function. Too little ease and the parts may foul even when within tolerance. Too much ease and the assembly loses precision or allows rattling.

In tightly controlled assemblies, ease can become a source of frustration. A piston in a hydraulic cylinder, for instance, must have enough ease to slide smoothly and allow hydraulic fluid films to form, but if ease is excessive, internal leakage increases and efficiency drops. Bearing fits are similarly critical: a shaft too tight in a bearing will overheat within minutes; one too loose will migrate and cause vibration and accelerated wear on the bore.

The term itself comes from the verb 'to ease', meaning to move something gently or to make it less tight. It has been standard shop language for over a century, particularly in machine tool work and assembly trades where the difference between a smooth running part and a seized one is often measured in ten-thousandths of an inch.
