Prefading is a manufacturing process that deliberately fades fabric or finished garments to create a worn-in appearance without years of wear. The technique applies chemical or mechanical treatment to new textiles, typically denim or cotton twill, to bleach out color and soften the hand feel. A finished pair of jeans might be prefaded in less than an hour through processes that would normally take months of customer use.

The core methods are chemical bleaching, enzyme treatment, stone washing, and abrasion. Chemical prefading uses dilute chlorine or potassium permanganate solutions applied to garments in rotary drums; permanganate is favored because it fades more uniformly and degrades faster in the wash stream, reducing environmental impact. Enzyme prefading uses cellulase enzymes that nibble cellulose fibers, softening them while creating a subtle faded zone. Stone washing, historically done with pumice stones, now often uses ceramic or plastic alternatives to reduce dust and wear on equipment. Mechanical abrasion with sandpaper or wire brushes creates localized fading on seams, pocket corners, and stress points.

Variants and application

Prefading intensity ranges from subtle all-over color reduction to heavy distressing with distinct light patches. Targeted prefading concentrates fading on high-wear areas: the seat, knees, and thighs of jeans; the cuffs and collar of denim jackets. Combination processes are common; a garment might be given chemical prefading first, then stone-washed, then hand-abraded on specific seams. The depth of fading is controlled by chemical concentration, temperature, wash duration, and agitation speed in the drum.

Quality control matters because prefading can weaken fabric if overdone. Potassium permanganate left too long on seams can cause tearing; excessive enzyme treatment degrades yarn tensile strength. Fading must be even across the batch, with color matching checked using spectrophotometry. Environmental discharge from bleach baths requires treatment before release; permanganate breaks down faster in conventional wastewater systems than chlorine.

The term reflects the garment industry's shift toward selling lifestyle rather than durability. Prefading lets manufacturers capture the aesthetic value of vintage workwear without compromising the structural integrity that new garments require. It emerged in the 1980s and became standard practice in denim production. The economics are straightforward: a consumer who perceives worn denim as desirable will buy newer garments more frequently, and prefading delivers that perception at point of sale. It is now a quality-control specification, not an optional finish.
