EGPRS: faster data on old mobile networks

EGPRS is a packet-switched data protocol that runs on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) cellular networks. It represents the evolution of GPRS, the earlier packet radio standard, and delivers roughly three to four times the throughput by using a modulation scheme called 8-PSK (eight-phase-shift keying) alongside the original GPRS modulation. Where GPRS maxed out around 40 to 50 kilobits per second, EGPRS could reach 120 to 220 kilobits per second in real deployments, though theoretical maximums were higher.

The gain came from denser modulation and link adaptation: the radio equipment continuously monitors signal quality and switches between modulation and coding schemes to match conditions. Strong signal means denser modulation and less error correction overhead; weak signal triggers fallback to simpler, more robust schemes. This dynamic adjustment allows EGPRS to maintain reasonable speed even as the handset moves through variable coverage, rather than either hanging at slow speed or dropping the connection.

Deployment and timeline

EGPRS appeared in GSM networks from around 2003 onward, rolling out in parallel with existing GPRS infrastructure. It required hardware upgrades at base stations and in handsets, but reused the same spectrum and core network. Many carriers deployed it as a stopgap before committing to 3G (UMTS), particularly in regions where 3G rollout was delayed. By the early 2010s it had become standard in mature GSM markets, though coverage remained patchy in rural areas.

The protocol lived an odd middle life. It was faster than GPRS but slower than contemporary UMTS or CDMA2000 networks, arrived after 3G had already launched in wealthy markets, and became obsolete with 4G LTE. However, it saw genuine use in M2M (machine-to-machine) applications and in countries where GSM infrastructure vastly outnumbered 3G coverage. Industrial telemetry, remote sensors, and utility monitoring often relied on EGPRS because the signal reach and cost profile suited those workloads better than faster but more power-hungry 3G.

EGPRS is now heritage technology in most developed networks, switched off or repurposed for narrowband IoT protocols. But in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, decommissioning has been gradual, and some GSM networks still carry EGPRS traffic for legacy applications that never migrated to newer standards.
