In analog telephone networks, crossed lines result from physical proximity and induction between copper pairs in the same cable bundle, or from faults in the switching matrix that momentarily bridge two separate circuits. A technician at a manual switchboard might accidentally plug a jack into the wrong hole, or deterioration in wiring insulation could allow signal bleed between neighboring pairs. In older electromechanical exchanges, mechanical wear or misalignment of stepping switches could cause contacts to touch the wrong terminals. The effect is always temporary because the fault breaks the isolation, not the connections themselves.
