Initialism of digital subscriber line.

DSL: high-speed data over ordinary phone wires

Digital subscriber line is a family of technologies that squeeze high-frequency data signals onto the same copper twisted pairs that carry voice telephone service. The telephone network was built for frequencies up to about 4 kHz; DSL exploits the unused bandwidth above that, typically from 25 kHz to 1 MHz, to send data while voice calls continue uninterrupted on the same line.

The most common variant in active use is ADSL, asymmetric digital subscriber line, which delivers faster speeds downstream (to the customer) than upstream, typically 1 to 10 Mbps down and 0.5 to 1 Mbps up depending on line length and quality. VDSL, the very high speed variant, reaches 50 to 100 Mbps down over shorter distances, usually under 1 km from the exchange. SDSL offered symmetric speeds but saw less deployment. The technology requires a DSL modem at the customer end and a DSLAM (DSL access multiplexer) at the telephone exchange.

Performance limits and real conditions

Line attenuation increases sharply with distance. At 3 km from the exchange, ADSL speeds drop noticeably; at 5.5 km, service becomes marginal. Copper quality, gauge, and the presence of bridge taps or loaded coils degrade performance. Crosstalk between adjacent pairs in the same cable bundle sets practical ceilings on throughput. Modern lines also suffer interference from other high-frequency devices and require careful filtering at both ends.

DSL held a critical role in residential broadband from the late 1990s through the 2010s, offering speeds ahead of dial-up and early cable modems without requiring new infrastructure where telephone lines already ran to homes. It remains deployed in millions of lines, particularly outside dense urban areas, though fiber-to-the-premise and 5G fixed wireless have begun displacing it in many regions. For technicians, DSL troubleshooting centers on signal-to-noise ratio, line sync stability, and distinguishing DSL faults from voice-line problems on the same pair.
