The elevator is a hinged, movable surface mounted on the horizontal stabilizer (tailplane) of an aircraft. It controls pitch, the up-and-down rotation of the nose around the lateral axis. When the control yoke or stick is pulled back, the elevator deflects upward, increasing the angle of attack and generating additional lift on the tail, which pitches the nose up; pushing forward deflects it downward, pitching the nose down.
Most general aviation and transport aircraft use a single elevator spanning the entire horizontal stabilizer or split into left and right halves for redundancy. Large aircraft often employ a separate trimmer tab, a small secondary surface on the trailing edge of the elevator itself, which reduces the control force needed from the pilot during sustained flight. Some military and high-performance aircraft replace elevators with a fully moving horizontal stabilizer called a stabilator or flying tail, which pitches the whole surface rather than deflecting a trailing edge.
Mechanical and aerodynamic issues
Elevator wear appears as excessive play in hinge pins, corrosion at attachment points, and degraded fabric or paint on the surface, all of which degrade control authority and response smoothness. Cable-operated elevators (the traditional method on many small aircraft) suffer from fraying, rust, and misrigging if cable tension is not maintained within specification. The elevator must be carefully balanced about its hinge line to avoid flutter, a destructive oscillation that can occur at high speeds if the center of gravity lies too far behind the hinge point.
The term comes from the Latin elevare, to lift, and was adopted early in aviation because the surface's primary visible function is to lift the tail when deflected, thereby lowering the nose. In nautical tradition, the corresponding control surface on a ship's rudder is called the rudder tab, but aircraft terminology reserves elevator specifically for pitch control on the horizontal plane.
Maintenance checks focus on rigging, cable tension, freedom of movement through the full range of deflection, hinge security, and inspection for cracks around fastener holes. Elevator trim systems require functional testing of the trim motor or hand wheel and verification that the trim indicator accurately reflects surface position. Any restriction in travel or asymmetry between left and right halves must be investigated and corrected before flight.
