ET: the paperless boarding pass that replaced the carbon copy
An electronic ticket, or ET, is a digital record of a passenger's flight reservation and payment held in an airline's database rather than issued as a physical document. The passenger receives a confirmation number and itinerary by email or SMS, and checks in using this reference or a mobile app rather than presenting a paper ticket at the gate. The system eliminates the need for the multi-part carbon forms that dominated airline operations before the late 1990s.
In aviation maintenance contexts, ETs matter because they directly affect ground handling workflows and aircraft turnaround times. When a gate agent can process passengers via mobile boarding passes instead of scanning printed stubs, the boarding sequence becomes faster and more trackable. Maintenance crews benefit from shorter dwell times between flights, and the reduction in paper handling reduces clutter in the flight deck and cabin that can interfere with safety inspections.
The industry transitioned to ETs gradually between the mid-1990s and early 2010s. Airlines like Lufthansa and KLM began piloting electronic ticketing in the late 1990s; most carriers worldwide abandoned paper tickets by 2008. The technology relies on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standardized messaging format and automated revenue accounting systems linked to booking databases. A single ET can be reissued, refunded, or changed without physical reprint.
From a maintenance standpoint, the shift to ETs reduced one source of cockpit clutter and eliminated the handling of thousands of ticket stubs that once required secure storage and post-flight accounting. It also standardized passenger data feeds to crew and ground crews, making it easier to track seat assignments, special services (unaccompanied minors, wheelchairs), and weight-and-balance manifests that maintenance and flight crew must verify before departure.
The term ET is now embedded in airline operations terminology, though you will rarely hear it spoken on the ramp. Ground handlers and maintenance staff work with the data ET systems generate (passenger counts, seat maps, special handling flags) rather than the tickets themselves. Understanding that an ET is a database entry, not a document, clarifies why missing or corrupted ET records can delay a flight more than a lost paper ticket ever could.
