NF: NASA's experimental fighter research prefix

In aircraft designation systems, NF is the manufacturer's prefix assigned by the United States military to experimental fighter aircraft built or modified by NASA (then NACA, the National Aeronautics and Consulting Administration, before 1958). The prefix appears as the first letter pair in formal model numbers, followed by a dash and sequential number, such as NF-104 or NF-1. This prefix coding exists within the larger X-series framework that distinguishes experimental, research, and developmental aircraft from production military models.

The N denotes a NASA or NACA-operated aircraft, while the F specifies fighter type. Other prefixes in this system include P for pursuit, B for bomber, and C for cargo. The designation applies to the aircraft as a research platform, regardless of whether it began life as a modified production fighter or was purpose-built for a specific aerodynamic or propulsion test program. The NF designation typically indicates the airframe served roles such as high-altitude research, supersonic boundary layer investigation, or novel control system evaluation.

NF aircraft occupied a specific niche in the Cold War research hierarchy. They were more specialized and formally tracked than one-off modifications bearing simple X-numbers, yet less common than the more famous X-planes that captured public attention. An NF example would have undergone structured testing protocols with documented flight data, instrumentation packages for measurement, and formal handover between test centers. This made them valuable for accumulating hard performance data on handling characteristics, structural limits, or propulsion behavior under controlled conditions.

The prefix system became formalized after 1948 under military designation rules. By the time NASA formed as a civilian agency in 1958, the NF coding was already established for earlier research work conducted under NACA authority. Aircraft carrying the NF prefix are now historical assets; the designation itself is rarely encountered in current aviation documentation because modern experimental research typically uses different tracking methods and organizational structures. Understanding the NF prefix helps maintenance technicians and historians correctly identify and contextualize Cold War era research airframes and their operational records.
