An exametre (Em) is a unit of length in the International System of Units (SI) equal to 1018 metres, or one quintillion metres. It occupies the seventh position in the standard SI prefix hierarchy, sitting between the zettametre (1021 m) and the petametre (1015 m). The prefix "exa" derives from the Greek "hex", meaning six, referring to the six groups of three zeros in the decimal expansion.

In practical metrology and industrial measurement, the exametre has almost no direct application. Precision dimensional work operates at the micrometre, nanometre, or occasionally the picometre scale. The exametre exists in the SI system for mathematical completeness and theoretical physics rather than workshop reality. Even in the most demanding calibration work, working lengths rarely exceed metres or kilometres.

Where exametres appear

The exametre finds use almost exclusively in astronomy, cosmology, and astrophysics when expressing distances in units other than the light-year or parsec. Distances to nearby galaxies, galactic structures, and voids within the observable universe can be stated in exametres for consistency with SI standards, though these fields typically prefer parsecs or astronomical units for practical communication. A light-year equals approximately 9.46 petametres, placing most cosmically relevant distances in the exametric range.

Standards bodies like the BIPM (Bureau International des Poids et Mesures) define and maintain the exametre to ensure completeness of the SI system across all scales from the smallest subatomic measurements to the largest cosmic distances. This hierarchical structure demands consistent naming conventions even when real-world demand for a unit is negligible. The symbol Em follows standard SI convention, using a capital letter for the prefix to avoid confusion with the lower-case "em" used in typography.

Engineers and metrology technicians working in manufacturing, calibration, or dimensional inspection will never encounter the exametre in their work. Its presence in reference standards reflects the SI system's ambition to provide a universal framework rather than practical necessity in the trades. Understanding its position in the prefix hierarchy helps technicians navigate SI documentation and grasp the full range of scales the system encompasses.
