teragram: one trillion grams, rarely needed
A teragram is a unit of mass in the SI system equal to 1012 grams, or one million metric tonnes. Its symbol is Tg. The prefix tera comes from the Greek word for monster, reflecting the scale: a teragram is used almost exclusively in geophysics, atmospheric science, and environmental monitoring where researchers measure planetary-scale quantities.
In practice, a teragram appears most often in scientific literature about carbon cycles, annual greenhouse gas emissions, and ore reserves. The global carbon dioxide emission in a given year might be expressed as several teragrams of CO2. A typical iron ore deposit of commercial interest is often measured in hundreds of megatonnes (equivalent to 0.1 to 0.2 teragrams), so the teragram sits just above the scale of individual mining operations and enters the realm of continental or annual totals.
When and why to use it
Industrial metrology, quality control, and trade measurement almost never use the teragram. Those fields operate at kilogram, tonne, or occasionally gigagram scales. The teragram is a tool of scientific publication and policy reporting. Environmental agencies cite teragram quantities when discussing atmospheric pollutants or carbon sequestration rates; materials scientists use it in literature on global resource extraction.
Because the teragram is so rarely needed in day to day industrial work, confusion about its value is common. A worker or technician checking a specification should verify whether a document claims teragrams or megatonnes, since a factor of 1000 error is easy to miss. The teragram remains part of SI but exists mainly on the page, not at the factory.
