A centimole is a metric unit for measuring the number of particles (atoms, molecules, or ions) in a substance. One centimole equals 0.01 moles, or approximately 6.022 × 10²¹ particles. It sits in the SI unit system as a decimal subdivision of the mole, the base unit for amount of substance.
In laboratories and quality control, centimoles are useful when dealing with small quantities. A chemist standardizing a titration solution might prepare a 0.1 molar (100 millimolar, or 10 centimorlar) solution by dissolving a precise mass calculated in centimoles. This unit avoids writing cumbersome decimal fractions; saying "5 cmol of sodium chloride" is clearer than "0.05 mol" when the quantities involved are genuinely small.
The centimole derives from the mole itself, defined since 2019 as exactly 6.02214076 × 10²³ particles. Any substance measured in centimoles rests on this fixed constant. The symbol cmol follows SI convention: the prefix centi- (c) denotes the factor 10⁻², and mol denotes the mole. No spaces separate prefix from unit symbol.
In practice, centimoles appear most often in pharmaceutical formulations, analytical chemistry, and material science where batch sizes or reaction quantities are modest.
