Eyebrowing is the accumulation of short fibers, neps, and textile waste that collects along the top rail or guidebar of a spinning frame during operation. These fragments build up in a visible ridge or tuft that resembles an eyebrow, hence the name. On ring frames and open-end spinners, eyebrowing typically occurs at the front of the spinning position where fibers are drafted and twisted into yarn.
The condition develops when short fibers, broken staple ends, and processing debris fail to be drawn into the yarn stream. Instead they lodge in the gaps between the guidebar and the yarn, or accumulate against the front rail where air currents and static charge hold them in place. The buildup is most pronounced in frames spinning coarser counts or when using low-quality raw material with high nep content and short fiber fragments.
Unchecked eyebrowing degrades yarn quality by introducing weak points where loose fibers can snag and break during winding or subsequent processing. It also harbors lint that contaminates the spinning environment and can eventually fall into finished yarn. Spinners control eyebrowing by regular cleaning of guidebars, using air-blast systems to clear fibers away from the spinning triangle, and maintaining proper drafting settings and fiber preparation upstream. Frame speed and relative humidity also influence how readily fibers accumulate.
The term is used across ring spinning, open-end rotor spinning, and air-jet spinning operations. It appears most frequently in mill troubleshooting logs and quality reports as a symptom of either maintenance neglect or material issues rather than as a design feature of equipment.
