Eyelash yarn is a composite yarn structure built around a core thread with secondary fibers anchored at regular intervals along its length, extending outward perpendicular or near-perpendicular to the axis. The protruding strands, typically 10 to 30 mm in length depending on the yarn count and intended effect, create a brushed or fringed appearance when knitted or woven. The core is usually a fine multi-ply or single strand; the radiating elements may be polyester, nylon, or acrylic filament, often in contrasting colors to the base.

The construction process involves feeding the base yarn and attaching prepared lengths of fancy fiber at fixed points using a modified twisting or looping mechanism. Spacing is uniform, typically every 5 to 10 mm. Some versions use a wrapper thread to secure the lashes; others rely on adhesive or thermal bonding. The result is a yarn that knits into a fabric with built-in texture and surface interest without requiring post-finishing loops or pile-raising steps.

Eyelash yarn is popular in apparel knitting for casual garments, scarves, and home textiles where a textured, fuzzy appearance is desired. The protruding strands catch light and add visual bulk without corresponding weight. However, the structure is fragile: the lashes snag easily on rough surfaces, hook onto fingernails during knitting, and shed fibers if tension is excessive or needles are too sharp. Yarn breakage rates run high in automated knitting, particularly on tight gauges or intricate stitch patterns.

The name reflects the resemblance of the radiating strands to eyelashes, a functional metaphor that aids marketing. The yarn emerged in the late 1990s as part of the novelty yarn boom and remains niche; volumes are small compared to standard worsted or woolen spins. It is rarely used in industrial knitwear where durability and cost efficiency dominate, and its use in warp knitting is minimal due to snag and breakage risk on fast-running machinery.

Quality issues include uneven lash attachment, which causes pilling or selective shedding of lashes from one side of the fabric, and inconsistent lash length within a single cone, leading to visual striping. Storage in humidity can soften adhesive bonds. The yarn demands experienced operators and low-speed machine settings to produce acceptable hand without excessive waste.
