Fallow is arable land that is prepared for cultivation, usually by ploughing and harrowing, but deliberately left unsown for a full growing season or longer. The practice interrupts the normal crop cycle to allow soil structure and fertility to recover. Historically, fallow was essential to sustainable grain farming; modern fallow is used more selectively, either as a conservation tool or where economics and soil condition dictate it.
Two main types exist in current practice. Summer fallow, common in dryland cereal regions, involves tilling the soil multiple times through spring and summer to kill weeds and accumulate soil moisture, then planting a crop in autumn or the following spring. Winter fallow, less common, leaves land bare through winter to trap moisture and allow frost action to break soil structure. The decision between active tilling during fallow or passive abandonment depends on weed pressure, rainfall patterns, and labour cost. A field may be fallowed for one year or rotated into a multi-year break if erosion risk or pest burden is severe.
Soil that has grown the same crop repeatedly becomes depleted in nitrogen and organic matter, structure decays, and pest populations build up in the topsoil. Ploughing fallow land kills existing weeds and allows microbial activity to mobilise locked nutrients. The absence of a competing crop for one season reduces pest and disease carryover, particularly important for soil-borne fungal pathogens. In arid and semi-arid regions, fallow accumulates stored soil moisture that would otherwise be used by weeds, giving the next crop a better start.
The trade-off is direct: a fallowed field produces nothing for twelve months, reducing yield per hectare per year. On marginal land with poor water or nutrient availability, this loss is offset by healthier soil and better crops in subsequent years. On fertile, well-managed land with adequate inputs, continuous cropping or short rotations often out-perform fallow economically. Modern rotations often replace bare fallow with cover crops, legumes, or green manure, which provide similar soil benefit while generating some biomass or nitrogen fixation.
The term fallow comes from the practice in medieval three-field systems, where one field lay fallow each year as a matter of necessity rather than choice. Its use persists in soil science and farm management, though the practice itself has declined in intensive arable regions where artificial fertility (nitrogen fertiliser, fungicide, herbicide) substitutes for the biological recovery that fallow provides. In organic farming and rainfed systems, fallow remains a standard tool.
